  • Whether the structure is conventional or Islamic
  • Whether a regulator’s approval is on the critical path
  • The number of lenders in a syndicate

Questions we're asked

Can we take security over movable assets in Egypt?

Yes, through the movable assets security registry, which works well and is fast. It covers receivables, inventory, equipment and bank accounts.

How long does registering a mortgage take?

A real estate mortgage depends entirely on whether the property’s title is registered. On registered title, weeks. On unregistered title, it may not be possible at all — which is why we check before the facility is signed.

Do you act for lenders or borrowers?

Both, on different transactions. Conflict check first.

Is an English-law facility agreement enforceable here?

The choice of law is generally respected, but security over Egyptian assets must comply with Egyptian law regardless. Splitting the documents accordingly is standard.

What licences does a lending business need?

That depends on who you lend to and how. Consumer finance, leasing, factoring and microfinance each have their own FRA licence. Lending without the right one is a criminal exposure, not a regulatory one.

Can profit be charged above the statutory interest cap?

Between merchants the position differs from civil transactions, and Islamic structures are treated separately. This is a question to ask before pricing, not after the first default.
